The collaborative project between Heavy Jeans and the BA (Hons) Fashion Design programme at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge School of art enabled the students to work on an industry based project and design a sustainable denim collection for spring summer 2022.

With support and guidance from Manuela and the design team at Heavy Jeans, the students responded to the design challenge and explored innovative sustainable themes such as gender neutrality, where garments can be worn by both men and women and reduce production waste. The use of hemp and bamboo fabrics as alternatives to cotton, and antibacterial and ultraviolet fabrics to promote health and wellbeing and protect the body from harmful factors.

The collaborative project with Heavy Jeans provided the students with an excellent opportunity to gain an insight in to the denim industry, and actively design a collection of commercial and sustainable denim-based products for the Heavy Jeans consumer.

Thank you so much to Manuela and the team who encouraged the students to explore more innovative sustainable design practices, and develop solutions to some of the challenges we face as designers.

Mark as seen by students...

The experience at ARU has been fundamental to me because It enabled me to fully understand my passion for designing.
Thanks to different modules I have been able to developed multiple skills that helped me achieve the level of preparation I got today.
My teacher and tutor Mark Hart has been helping me reach the final outcome thanks to his professional advices.
Within hi shelp I developed what I consider my own style and designing practice which is the most important achievement I reached until today.

ARU Cambridge School of Art gives you the opportunity to be a part of the most amazing creative community. What makes this university special is that even though fashion design is a very competitive field, here you are surrounded by friends and everyone is willing to help you. Mark Hart is a tutor who will always challenge you and put you out of your comfort zone so you can reach your full potential. He will always support you and you can count on him for a feedback during every stage of the projects. It’s a pleasure for me to work with him.

During this project with Heavyjeans, I had a lot of ideas about how I wanted to present my ideas and designs through creating fabric. I was quite carried away by it and I was constantly confused if I was on the right path of my project. Mark was really helping me out with focusing on the right way to present my work. He always gave me advice like what images are better to use in order to deliver the message I am thinking. And without these advices the whole collection and my portfolio would not be as cohesive.

My time at ARU so far, as a current second year and soon to be third year student, has been a huge learning experience but one full of creativity and opportunity. It has allowed me to experiment with a variety of techniques using an array of machinery whilst learning new things, expand my skills and knowledge, and develop a design style and process that allows to me to design what I want. I am excited for the future, and I cannot wait to find out what my final year brings me.
Mark Hart has been a lecturer for us since the very first day when we were just starting out in pattern cutting, and has been an incredible support for all of us especially throughout work-ing on our live brief collaboration with Heavy Jeans. He has been a constant source of advice all throughout working on the project, making sure that our work was immaculate but re-mained true to ourselves and our design process, and we could not have asked for a better mentor.

My experience as a second, soon to be third year student at ARU University has already greatly enhanced my education. I have gained a huge range of skills as well as having learnt from the variety of experiences, opportunities and collaborations that they have facilitated during my course. This has further developed my existing skills as well as engaging in new ones such as adaptability, time management, resourcefulness and design development. For me, this experience so far has been great in developing my character and guided me further along my journey as a designer, fuelling my excitement for the third year of my course and my future in the fashion industry.
Mark Hart has been an amazing lecturer to us throughout the two years I have been at ARU, striving for me to better myself through his encouragement. As our lecturer he has definitely aided my greater confidence in my own ability as a designer, inspiring me to always achieve. He has truly been an amazing mentor, particularly within our collaboration with Heavy Jeans. His involvement of bringing this collaboration together is definitely one I am very thankful for.
