“With ⊻ Without”

Spring/Summer 2023 _ Francisca

Francisca

Designer CSA

"Living in a global, socially connected era fuelled by social media and the internet, this collection raises awareness of isolation and increasing social anxiety, especially amongst the younger population.."

Influenced by the 90’s industrial grunge aesthetic, this oversized gender neutral collection is reminiscent of the origins of Heavy Jeans. Utilising contemporary patchwork techniques this upcycled denim collection reimagines vintage denim for the younger consumer.

Tell me about your project?

“Influenced by personal experiences throughout the pandemic, especially navigating the new
post-pandemic world. Feelings of social anxiety and associated emotions such as isolation,
loneliness…feeling like a ghost was the foundation of the With ⊻ Without collection. Inspired
by the grunge movement, the collection translates emotive bodily reactions and experienced
expressions of an anxiety. Informed by the work of artists such as Francis Bacon and
photographers Saul Leiter and Masahisa Fukase the contemporary denim-based products
focus on upcycling to create a sustainably-focused future.."

What have you enjoyed most with your collaboration with Heavy Jeans?

"This exciting collaborative project has enabled me to develop my creativity and work closely
with the Heavy Jeans design team to create a commercial collection of products. The project
has provided me with the opportunity to combine innovation and sustainable design
practices and develop my knowledge and skills.. "

How has this experience informed your practice as a designer?

"The collaborative project with Heavy Jeans has enabled me to explore innovative and
technical-based design methods and develop a range of sustainable practices. Regular
feedback with the design team, I’ve been able to consider alternative design practices,
exploring how new environmentally-focused materials and manufacturing processes are
revolutionising the industry.."

Why is sustainability important in the fashion industry?

"The fashion industry is one of the largest industries in the world but it is also one of the most
problematic industries with regards to emitting pollutants that are devastating our
environment. The increase of low production cost has fuelled ‘fast fashion’ but ultimately this
leads to the production of millions tonnes of waste and pollution, and the destruction of our
natural resources. As young designers we are able to explore sustainable design and
production practices, and educate others to change the world for the better.."
